Madras University Distance Education Admission 2026

Madras University Distance Education was founded in 1857, making it one of India’s oldest universities, and it ranks 13th in NIRF (2024) with an NAAC ‘A++’ grade. It established its Institute of Distance Education (IDE) in 1981 in order to bring education closer to the people by allowing them not to necessarily attend regular classes — IDE operates as an independent part of the university in terms of student enrolment. Today IDE UNOM offers 70+ programmes across Arts, Commerce, Science, Social Science, Management, Computer Science and Performing Arts, in specializations ranging from Accounting and Finance, Financial Management, Yoga, Labour Law, HRM and E-Commerce to Indian Christianity and Cyber Forensics.

Madras University Distance Education admission process is online. Candidates open ideunom.ac.in, click “Admissions”, select Online Admission, and register with their phone number or email address — an OTP is sent to the mobile. They then log in with the new username and password, choose their programme, complete the form with accurate information, upload documents in PDF format, submit with the application fee, and download the application PDF. Admission is merit-based for the majority of programmes — MBA and MCA are the exceptions, requiring a valid TANCET score or the entrance test conducted by IDE. Madras University Distance Education Admission Eligibility

For UG, Diploma and Certificate programmes:

  • Candidates must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board.
  • Minimum marks vary by programme — generally between 33% and 50% depending on the course, with relaxation for SC/ST/OBC categories.
  • Applicants must fulfil any additional subject requirements specified for certain programmes — BCA requires Mathematics at 10+2.
  • Alternative routes accepted: a two-year foundation course from Annamalai or Madurai Kamaraj University, or a pass in the GCE (Principal or Advanced level) with English at O Level.

For PG and PG Diploma programmes:

  • Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in the relevant field from a recognised university, generally with 45%–55% marks.
  • MBA: a bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks (5% relaxation for SC/ST), plus a valid entrance score — TANCET, or the entrance test conducted by IDE.
  • MCA: a BCA / BSc IT / BSc Computer Science, or a BA/BCom/BSc with Mathematics as a compulsory subject. The university also accepts 12th-passed students who have completed an additional bridge course.
  • MSc (Statistics/Maths-based): a bachelor’s degree with statistics, mathematics, business mathematics or business statistics as main or allied subjects.

General:

  • UG admission is merit-based and conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

B.A. A three-year degree offered in 9 specializations — Tamil, Tamil Literature, English, French, Economics, Historical Studies, Sociology, Public Administration and Bank Management. A 10+2 pass from a recognised board qualifies you, admission is merit-based with no entrance exam, and tuition runs about ₹6,470 to ₹9,330 per year.

BCom and BBA. Three-year commerce and business degrees covering accounting, taxation and business law, admitted on 10+2 merit.

BCA. A three-year, six-semester computing degree covering programming languages, database management, operating systems, web design and practical labs. Note: Mathematics at 10+2 is required. The course fee is about ₹10,070.

BFA and BLit (Tamil). Fine Arts and Bachelor of Literature in Tamil — distinctive offerings reflecting the university’s performing-arts and Tamil-language heritage.

MA and M.Com. Two-year master’s programmes across the humanities and commerce, requiring a relevant bachelor’s degree.

MSc. Two-year science master’s programmes including Information Technology and the distinctive MSc Cyber Forensics and Information Security, which includes Personal Contact Programme practical classes and examinations.   2. Find “Admissions” and click on it.
  3. Select Online Admission and register with your personal phone number or email address.
  4. Enter the OTP received on your mobile.
  5. Create your ABC ID and DEB ID — both are mandatory before registration.
