About IDOL Mumbai University

Mumbai University Distance Education dates back to 1857, which makes it one of the first three universities established in India. Its distance-learning wing came in 1971 as IDOL and now operates as the Centre for Distance & Online Education. The idea has always been to open up recognised degrees to people who can’t attend regular classes — working professionals, homemakers, and students spread across the country. IDOL is one of the largest distance institutions in India, with an enrollment running into tens of thousands.

Mumbai University Distance Education  programmes are UGC-DEB approved and the university holds an NAAC ‘A++’ grade, so the distance degrees carry the same weight as the regular ones for jobs and higher studies. Learning is supported by study material, recorded lectures, online sessions and weekend contact classes at the Kalina campus, which also offers library, sports and other facilities.

The process is online. You register on the official CDOE/IDOL portal with your email and mobile number, receive login credentials, complete the form, choose your course and subjects, upload documents, and pay the fee. The medium of instruction is mainly English.

Most programmes go by merit — your marks in the last qualifying exam. MMS and MCA are the exceptions, admitted through an entrance (MAH-CET or IDOL’s own online entrance test) followed by selection on the entrance score. The July 2026 window closes on 31 July 2026 (tentative), so applying early is sensible.
